Pretty Brainy’s corps of volunteer mentors have addressed some of girls’ most pressing academic and professional questions: how to deal with failure; how to be persistent; how to be assertive and ask questions; how to deal with gender bias and harassment; how to show up for science and math, and much more. They dished up insight on how to find and apply for internships; how to navigate college admissions and scholarships; and how to accelerate English as a second language to access higher-level math and science.

A Mentor Will Shift How a Girl Sees Her Abilities and Herself

Most importantly, Pretty Brainy mentors have embodied everything they passed on: persistence, problem-solving, professional presence, infinite curiosity, confidence and assertiveness, self-efficacy, and failing, falling, and getting back up.

In a recent LinkedIn study, 82 percent of women professionals called mentoring — being a mentor and being mentored — a critical component of their success.
